Review of Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji

Madhur Bhandarkar  is well known for making serious, hard hitting, socially relevant film like Chandni Bar, Fashion, Corporates, Jail  etc but this time opted for light hearted entertainer. Well this Baccha of Madhur is little bit Pucca, somewhat Kachacha .

Story Telling 

DTBHJ story is about a divorcee Bank Manager Naren Ahuja(Ajay Devgan), A Casanova Abhay (Emaran Hasmi) and A traditional Dude Millind (Omi Vaidya). The story moves around their unrequited love, Heartbreak and renewed hopes.

Naren at the age of 38, works for a multinational company and has a crush on a girl named June(Shazhan Padaamsee). To impress her, he goes through complete image makeover. Nikhil a out of gym instructor but a naughty playboy , who successfully mange to teach Yoga to both Mother(Tisca Chopra) and Step daughter(Shuti Hassan) and Millind, a poet, is head over heels in live with Gunjan(Shraddha Das). So the movie is about the extent to which the three different character go, to get their  love. The story completely justify the title “Dil toh Baccha Hai Ji” as men never get tired to woo women and fail in love. It also gives you a reflection of the way men struggle to cope with modern women and cotemporary relationship.

Directors Cut

Three time National award Filmmaker Has moved from dark, issue-based moves to a rendezvous with identifiable, every character telling stories with a sprinkling of humor. We all know Mudhur is a great story teller but the film plot fails to entice. Although the dialogues ensure a few laugh, the story is predictable and unappealing. I really appreciate Madhur because he moved form his comfort zone and tried some thing different but still I will love to buy a ticket for his Intense cinema.

Cinematography is nothing noteworthy, while editing follow a linier story telling. Dialogues are conventional and sometimes funny likes Emraan’s ideology to love “Soo aur Sone DO”, The concept of loosing “Virginity” and hot yoga dialogues are funny and refreshing.

Performances

Ajay has given a very good performance with mid life crises& a confused aged man in love with a young intern. Certainly much better performances then Goolmal 3. Emraan did what he best at, he plays the role of a womanizer perfectly but the performance of his is surely look repetitive & old, nothing new to add forward in his biodata. Omi will give you a reflection of his past onscreen role ‘ Chatur' as his ascent & the way he deliver his dialogs is quite same and did his part very nicely. Shaddha manages to overshadow the other two with an ambiguous & practical role. Shazahn is sweet & look fresh then Rocket Shingh. Shruti has less screen space but manages to snick a good performance & promised to deliver much more in the future. Trisca is convincing with her aged lay performance.  

Music

Pritam music is fresh . Sonu has returned with his trade mark style of romantic flavor with Tere Bin and Mohit’s “Abhi Kuch Dino” is perfect and brings a foot tapping appeal to the song.. Background music is Smooth if not great.

In short(Up & Down)

Ups

• Anxious to see makeover of Madhur as a comedy Director
• Story is predictable most of the time but still puts a smile on the face with some hilarious scene like the one where Ajay with his car and waiting outside his office to give lift to shazahm ,but she is zipped away on the bike with a cool dude or  The midnight Yoga teaching By Emraan or reading the farewell letter or Omi’s haggles to extra lines & rose in the bouquet and few some..
• The humors are subtle and not like many recent comedy movie where they screams for attention.

Downs

• The storyline and screenplay lack punches. The hummers and comedy scene are too little to enjoy for a 2&halfhour movie.
• The roller coaster ride of emotions is repetitive and the romantic take on love is too old.
• The chain of events all through the films could have been far more interesting instead of a screenplay full of cliché scenes.
• Some of the irritating line of shazahm, where she repeatedly saying :Please,Please..” to her boss in every little things. 
• The narrative is smooth but not good.

Verdicts

DTBHJ is certainly missing the spark with predictable climax and caricature characters but the movie has its moments & its good for one time watch if you walk in to the theaters without high exception. With A reasonable budget the movie is excepted to do average business. The movie released with 850/900 cinemas, should collect around 12/13cr in the weekends and will warp up the week under 20/21cr.
