Story Telling:
The story of Patiala house is a mainly inspire from 3 movies. First “Bent It Like Beckham”, in which Anupam Khre played the role of a Sikh father living abroad and Parminder Played her daughter who wants to play for football team. And after all the opposition, her father does come to watch her play in the end. Now talking about “Goal”, which has a similar Racialism issue with a different background. The third one is “Khoobsurat”, where the family social value has utilized in the movie. The story treatments is quite similar , where Urmila subdues her feeling and dreams for the shack of the family, where one respected personality rule the family.
And now coming to the story line of Patiala House, the movies set is based on England, Patiala House is a tale of Parghat Singh Kahlon named Gattu (Akshay Kumar), who has let go his dreams to follow a career in cricket because of his autocrat father Gurtej Kahlon akaa Bhauji (Rishi Kapoor). The reason behind Bauji’s conformist attitude is the racial discrimination by British which led to the killing of his dear uncle Mr. Sahini (Prem Chopra) long years ago. Gattu has to bear the burden because his Bhauji as a matter of standing doesn’t allow him to join the England team & he instead becomes a shopkeeper. In fact, Bhauji is the decision-taker of entire Kahlon family who blame Gattu responsible for their miserable condition as he couldn’t stand by his decisions as the eldest son. Simram (Anushka Sharma) a relatives of Kahlon family somehow realizes Gattu’s dreams and influenced him to grant a second to his career as a Fast bowler when the sole Indian in the British cricket counseling team Mr. Bedi (Tinu Anand) proposes Gattu’s name as a new bowler in England team. Now, how will Gattu fulfill his dreams as a bowler despite advert is surely an interesting watch?
Performances:
After a while Askhay did justice to his acting talent. I loved the performances in “Humko Deewana Kar Gaye”, “Namaste London”,” Waqt: The Race” etc. He is truly radiant with his expressions and dialogue delivery. Rishi Kapoor can still give run for money with super-energetic stunning performance. As a Shik, his get- ups, dialects, body language and style is highly authenticated as well as entertaining. Anuhska Sharma yet again proves that she is here to stay with her flawless act but I feel she is better in Baand Baaja Bharat. Dimple Kapadia is wasted, she gets a rough treatment science the story line is based on Father-Son relationship. The rest of the cast is fine And Usman Qureshi, who really looks like a young Akshay kumar in the Flash back.
Directior’s Cut:
Nikhil backs to emotional drama where he belongs to. He certainly reminder me Kal Ho Na Ho as far as the characterization is Concern. He has perfectly chosen all the characters and cast ideal actors. He has wonderfully capture the emotions of every character and convincingly portrayed onscreen. If he had been added little more dimensions to the storyline, Specially to the Cricket matches, the film would have been a power-packed phenomenon
Music is good and enjoyable with some delightful choreography in songs like ‘Rola Paegya’. Cinematography is good complemented with a crispy editing. Dialogues are good but due to poor writing if suffer the most. The choreography is refreshing.
In Short : Ups and Downs:
UPS
· The First 15 minute film clarify every thing about the trepidation , In fact for me the first Half an Hour of the movie was the best part of the project to be precise .
· Very good performances are one of strong points of the film followed by Situational Music. Some of the scenes are very heart touching like, One can’t take eyes-off him when he is in tears for breaking his Bhauji’s heart , I am talking about the ICU scene.
· Gattu has been meticulously built and the character is expressively relevant. The visible two sections of the house make you witness some heartwarming conflicts and moving moments.
· Dialogues and innovative choreography by Remo D'Souza is another highpoint.
Downs
· A predictable storyline, same old bollywood formula to attract audiences. It reminds you a very typical melodrama in a lot of way.
· There are some major mistakes which can’t be ignored, like the whole act of hiding the developments for the team selection and stopping Rlshl gii from watching the entire tournament till the final(in this ultra modern technology) is little heard to understand. Second the time Rishi gi car breaks the signal and the traffic cops of London forgive him & guided him to Stadium. The sudden chang in Rishi gi behavior is abrupt and the metamorphosis is heard to believe. Yes these Tic-Tak is acceptable for any Acton or any fantacy movie but for a family drama its quite unacceptable.
· The movie whish is based on cricket, does not justify the big sport on screen. It totally failed to offer emotional touch and entertaining value to the audience where other cricket based sports movies like IQBAl & LAAGAAN scores.
· A slightly dragged first half and in the second half some scene are unconvincing. And Less of outdoor scenes, the indoor drama makes you feel little boor.
Verdict:
After a series of mind less comedy & action films, Akshay can surely bank on ‘Patiala House’ as the film is a complete entertainer though it rests on a very predictable storyline. Had little more dimensions been added to the storyline; the film would have been a power-packed phenomenon. Nevertheless, it is surely one time watchable movie . As I said before the film has little to offer in terms of locales as most of it has been shot either in Patiala house or the cricket ground. The chemistry between Akshay and Anuhska is very cute and not to miss the power packed performance by Rishi Kapoor, which is another highlight of the film. But after saying all these things Patiala House remains a half baked product with a slow first half and a very unconvincing second half. Patiala House is neither a complete comedy nor a complete drama movie. It neither makes you laugh whole heartedly nor touch to heart & create goosh bump with the emotion scenes what usually happens in a Family drama movie.
Business Thought: Boxoffice point of view the movie will start slow and as the prerelease buzz is not great the weekend many also fared in the lower side as compared to other Askay movies. Weeked collection seems to be around 16-18cr taking 1400 prints and the week collections will be near about 31-32cr. The budgrt of the movie is 26-27cr approximately. The Indian theatrical right has been sold near about 21-22cr and by adding Non theatricals revenue (add another 18cr expected)& overseas collections , the movie will fetch a handsome profit for the producer. Also the distributors have also been given the film at fair prices so they should recover their investments. The movie need 45cr to get a Hit status.
