Summarizing Bollywood of 2010

Welcoming 2011 let's discuss how bollywood fair in 2010. It's been a tumultuous of a year for Bollywood. We've seen some great times and some gosh darn terrible moments that the industry would like to forget. However, memories fade slowly and when it comes to the Indian public, then we never forget. Amidst the nonstop gossip, the flops and flashes which made us want to scream, there were moment which wowed us, shocked us but definitely entertained us.
The success and failure is the part of everything. The Bollywood movies are not the exception. Some of the Bollywood movies become blockbusters and some become flops. It all takes place due to time and the trend of the people. The stars are very important behind the success story of the Indian films. It is seen that the movies usually becomes very successful at the time of holidays of the people. The Indian cinema has been proved to be successful during the period of May, June and July as there remains a long vacation for the school students. Almost all the kids and parents are engaged with the idiot box to know the current trends of Bollywood. As a rule, the people get more time for the entertainment, holidays and for shopping as well. The newspapers and internet gets instant information as the Bollywood movies are about to come to light. Also, the people get more time to watch cinema with the members of the family.

The year 2010 has offered some of the blockbuster movies to the Indian people worldwide. The heartening fact was that 2 films this year grossed once seemed impossible 100 crore gross collection at the box office. On the other hand few big films with big names were major disappointments. With the year end, it is time to look at the report card of Bollywood in 2010 as well as giving a glance to how big stars fared and which new faces were launched this year.

Movie that succeed
Starting with the years biggest hit Salman Khan's Dabangg, Which owed the bollywood with tremendous BO collection with a profit margin of over 300% return WRT its cost .  Dabangg was the biggest hit of year grossing  144 crores at the box office. The film broke the opening weekend record of 3 Idiots but fell short of latter's overall collections. Presently this cop action movie is the second highest grossing movie of all time in India. Golmaal 3 became the 4th film to cross the 100 crore mark in Bollywood. The film which was released on Diwali has grossed more than 105 crores till now and is counting. This was the first time when two Bollywood films in one year grossed more than 100 crores. Rajneeti was the third biggest hit of the year and missed the 100 crore mark by just around 7 crores did around 93 cr. This multi starrer film was the highest grossing film of the year till Dabangg and Golmaal 3. Akshay Kumar's Housefull was another notable success and it earned 72 crores. Shahrukh Khan's My Name is Khan was also successful though in the same league as Dabangg. Ajay Devgn's Once Upon a Time in Mumbai and Imran Khan's I Hate Love Storys were the other bigger successes of the year. While in the last month No Problem fails and BBB gains and while TMK travels with a smooth speed.

Movie That Disappoint’s
The year will be more remembered for the fact that many of the big names failed to create any charisma at the box office and their films sank without a trace. Salman khan's Veer was the first big casualty of the year. The period drama couldn't succeed due to its paper thin plot and loose script but did some wonderful business in Single screens. Amitabh Bachhan's Teen Patti was the next in line to get some bashing. The film which also starred Sir Ben Kingsley failed to take even a decent opening. But the biggest failure of the year was undoubtedly Hrithik Roshan's first film in 2 years - Kites. The film had generated a lot of buzz due to it being first crossover film of Bollywood in recent years. The presence of Mexican star Barbara Mori added zing to the film's marketing. The film opened well too but then fizzled out due to very poor and clichéd story. Hrithik's next film didn't fare better either. Guzaarish was another failure for the actor in the year. Mani Ratnam's Raavan, which was simultaneously made in Hindi and Tamil failed to live up to its expectations. The film was being touted as one of the sure shot success of the year. Abhishek Bachhan's next film Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se had one of the worst openings of the year. This period drama was also pretty expensive production. Akshay Kumar's first major failure since Chandani Chowk to China in the form of Action Replayy summed up the year for Bollywood in which big stars failed to save their films.
Medium and Small Budget movies
Medium and small budget films did what their big budget counterparts couldn't. As many as half a dozen small films were fairly successful at the box office. First success of the year, Ishqiya, was a medium budget film starring Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. Comedy Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge starring Ajay Devgn was another medium budget success. Aamir Khan's Peepli Live was one of the notable successes of the year. This film, with an offbeat theme and very small budget, did wonders at the box office. The year's most surprising hit though was a small film Tere Bin Laden and Band Baaja Baarat. The film didn't have any big names associated with it but it succeeded on the strength of its content and pure performances. Udaan was another small success of the year.
Though small films did well in 2010, overall picture is not as rosy as it seems. The reason behind it is that the hit ratio of the smaller films is almost same as the big budget films. More than 30 small films were released in the year but only few could succeed. This is certainly not a good indication for the film industry.

Biggies Failures in 2010
Big names and big budgets largely fell flat in Bollywood in 2010 but the year at least saw new directors emerge unafraid to push the boundaries to cater for a changing audience.. The list includes A list actors as well as directors. Hrithik Roshan had a forgettable year as 2 of his ambitious films failed to create any ripple at the box office. It has resulted into erosion in his star power. Akshay Kumar had a mixed year as Housefull was hit and Tees Maar Khan is fairing avg bussiness. But the bashing received by Action Replayy at the box office should be a wake up call for him. Abhishek Bachhan had a terrible year as well as both Raavan and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se were major failures. Kareena Kapoor couldn't help lackluster We Are the Family to get the hit status at the box office. Imran Khan couldn't repeat the success of I hate Love Storys and Break ke Baad was a complete washout. Shahrukh Khan had major release in form of My Name is Khan and it was successful. Ranbir Kapoor's honeymoon with box office continued as Rajneeti was a big hit while Anjaana Anjaani did fairly well at box office. Ajay Devgn too had a mixed year as Rajneeti, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai and Golmaal 3's success was diluted by failure of Aakrosh. Salman's Veer was a avg but Dabangg was a gigantic success. Imran Hashmi's solo film Crook bit the dust at the box office.
More than the actors, it were the top notch directors who failed to do well this year. Anurag Basu directed a dud in the form of Kites. Mani Ratnam's experimental take on Ramayana failed to find any takers. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's over confidence on his project Guzaarish overshot its budget and film was a spectacular disappointment. Vipul Shah produced his second flop in row in the form of Action Replayy. Ashutosh Gowarikar too had to pay a price for making an expensive film on a little known tale of independence and Annes over rated No problem create problems for audiences and distributor . Only Karan Johar, Prakash Jha and Rohit Shetty could salvage their reputation this year.

Notable Debutants in 2010
The industry saw few new names in the field of acting and directing and a no. of them had a promising beginning. The very first name is of Sonakshi Sinha, daughter of Shatrughan Sinha who made her debut in Dabangg and impressed everybody. Dabangg was also the debut film for its director Abhinav Kashyap, brother of Anurag Kashyap. Abhishek Chaubey, director of Ishqiya was another impressive debutant of the year along with Vikramaditya Motwane, director of Udaan. Anusha Rizvi showed her directing prowess with Peepli Live. Rajat Barmecha, the young protagonist of Udaan was another promising actor and in last month emerge another star Raajver  from Band Baaja Baarat who made a debut in 2010.

Bussiness of bollywood in 2010
Based on box office collections, 2010 will be remembered as the best year for Hindi movies so far. Around 136 Hindi movies released close 2010 with all-time high net collections of over Rs 2,000 crore, at least 20% more than 2009 and the highest in last several years.
Also, an average commercially successful Hindi film this year managed to give 17-20% return on investments for the producers and distributors. However, only a handful of Hindi movies fared well at the box office. The box-office collections are compiled by several trade analysts based on the weekly collections reported from across the country.
Based on the collections, the top six grossers till date cornered over Rs 680 crore this year. These include Rajnikanth’s Robot, Salman Khan’s Dabangg, Ranbir’s Raajneeti, Ajay Devgun’s Golmaal-3, Akshay Kumar’s Housefull and Shah Rukh Khan’s My Name Is Khan. While Tees maar khan registered a earthscattering opening with around 12.75cr and a tremendous weekend collection of 37,5 cr .it was the 3rd highest best weekend collection of bollywood. Though it is doing good enough business to recover its cost of 67 cr but this was not excepted form this movie.
Exhibitors like PVR, Inox, Reliance Media, Cinemax too are expected to generate 10-15% increase in revenue for the fiscal 2010-11. Additionally, several exhibitors have announced expansion plans including more screens in 2011.
Experts attributed the success of Hindi movies to a number of reasons including smart marketing, rational movie budgets, and wider releases among others.
“This year also witnessed price corrections as far as Bollywood stars and film projects go. Also, Bollywood became smart in terms of expanding the release of its films to reach wider audience in both multiplexes and single screens within the country. Movie like TMk released the movie well over 2000 screen space , while dabangg release with around 1400 screen space.
However, film analysts pointed out that all did not go well with Hindi films this year as several movies failed to enthuse the box office like Raavan, Kites, Guzarish, KHJJS, Action replay, Akrosh and TKS.
“If you take out the collections of films like Robot or Dabangg, Bollywood had a pretty ordinary year. More films failed and the return on investments were abysmal this year,” said Timmy Kandhari, India leader (entertainment & media practice), PwC. “In last month alone, Bollywood would have lost around Rs 100 crore or so,” he said.
According to a film trade analyst, Robot has generated Rs 240 crore in net collections while Dabangg collected Rs 144 crore. The gross collections minus entertainment tax yields the net collection figures. Compared to big budget films, small and medium budget films like I Hate Luv Stories, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Well Done Abba, Ishqiya and Love Sex Aur Dhoka, Band Baja Baarat among others met with commercial success. “While there are loads of flop films even this year, there has been a surge in the overall commercially successful films and that has contributed to the success of Bollywood in 2010,” an analyst who tracks film exhibition companies said.
