New Trend Of Doing Sequel In Bollywood
Now a days Sequels are became a trend in Bollywood , Specially if the first part is a huge success. But one can’t turn a mediocre film into a brand or franchise. Frequency of sequels is important to keep the curiosity alive. I really feel most filmmakers announce sequels without realizing the magnitude of storyline. They are not thinking whether they can add value to the sequel or not. While a comedy like Golmaal can get away with supplementary characters or an action movies like Dhoom 3 & Don 2 & Dabangg2 can be effective by showing some ultra modern action sequences but it can’t go on with films such as Sarkar, which ended with Sarkar Raj.” And recently Ekta Kapoor wants to bring back the charisma of Ajay Devgn in Once Upon A Time In OUATIM 2. Devgn’s character dies in the first part and another stars will be carry forward Emran’s character, I really feel unnecessarily characters will be stretched. I mean there are some movies which are class a part. I can’t imagine a sequel of 3 idiots. And it can be seen from the collections that sequels are far bigger than their predecessors. Also the sequels by and large have not got good media reviews that the predecessors did but the public gave them huge thumbs up therefore proving to be unstoppable at the boxoffice.
For me most anticipation movie’s ranking as follow
1. Dhoom-3 : It will be huge wrt to previous brands. 1st time 3 big brands are coming together, Brand Dhoom, brand Yesraj & Brand Aamir Khan. Abhisek (who will be seen as fearless cop with shirtless body) and Uday Chopra return as jai & Ali, this time on the trail of Aamir, who leads them on the chase.
Business Part
Dhoom(2004):–29.50cr nett
Dhoom2(2006):–80cr nett
Dhoom 3 (2012) – 150(+)cr nett (Expected)
2. Don 2 :- Don-The Chase Begins a jazzed up remake of the classic hit Don (Amitabh Bachchan rigid), but Don-2 is the successor. This simply means we now have the same suave gadget-friendly, smooth-talking Don participated in an adventure of a different character.
Business Part
Don (2006) : 51 ce nett
Don 2 (2011): 90-100(+)cr nett (Expected)
3.Dabangg 2: - Chulbul Pandey will come back next year , as the twin brother of Sonu Sood’s as Chhedi Singh surface for revenge in Metro based environment. It will be interesting to see who this movie shaping up, because the 1st part was huge success and before starting of Dabangg 2, it was flowed with lot of controversies. After showing the door to Abinav , Arbaag khan will direct the movie.
Business Part
Dabangg (2010) : 144 cr nett
Dabangg 2 (2012): 100-110(+)cr nett (Expected)
4. Krissh 2 : Hrithik ready to returns as the masked superhero under Daddy Roshan. Since they waited years to announce the film, it’s no surprise they are keeping the plot under warps. Krissh was the sequel of Blockbuster movie Koi Mil Gaya
Bussiness Part
Koi Mil Gaya (2003) – 42 cr nett
Krissh (2006) – 70 cr nett
Krissh 2(2012)- 90-95(+)cr nett(Expected)
5. Houseful 2: After successful run of Houseful at the box office the production house all set to make its Sequel. It was Akshay’s biggest hit till date and producer Sajid Nadiadwala got director Sajid Khan working to take the story forward. The movie is really heating up because of its huge star cast and the promotion has begin even before one year, with a short teaser shown in the World Cup 2011.
Business Part
Houseful (2010) : 73 cr
Houseful 2 (2012): 80-85(+) cr nett (Expected)
6. No Entry Mai Entry : This movie will be another anticipated movie for me. No entry was a laugh riot and it was the biggest hit 2005. This time in the sequel the character will be played by Salman Khan along with Anil Kapoor & fardhin Khan directed by Anees Bazmee.
Business Part
No Entry (2005) : 41cr nett
No Entry Mai Entry (2012) : 65-75(+)cr nett(Expected)
7.Race 2: This time Saif will be battle against John Abraham. Deepika Padukone has been conformed. Race was one of the best suspense-thriller film in the Bollywood and The first was super-hit, anticipating even bigger hit with the sequel.
Business Part
Race (2008): 62 cr nett
Race 2 (2011): 75-80(+)cr nett (Expected)
8.Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 : Sultan mirza died in the Milan Luthia directed film on the underworld in the 70’s. So now Sohaib khan will take the story forward, where Akshay kumar is replaced by Emran Hashmi. Once Upon A Time In Mumbai was a hit and the dialogues were well praised by the audiences along with melodious music.
Business Part
Once Upon A Time In Mumbai (2010): 58 cr nett
Once Upon A Time In Mumbai 2 (2012): 60-65(+)cr nett(Expected)
Beside these movie other anticipated movies are, Raaz-2, Muder-2, Double Dhamal etc and movies in the pipeline are Munna Bhai Chale Amerika, Partner-2, Wanted-2, Golmaal-4, Hera Pheri-4, Doostana-2, Shing is King-2 , Mr India 2, Yamla Pagla Deewana and Kya Kool Hai Hum etc.
The most successful brand till date are Dhoom series, Golmaal series, Munna Bhai series, Krissh and Hera-pheri series, these movies were almost double there business in the sequel parts. And some of the unsuccessful brand are Style(2001), Phoonk, Hathyar (2002) (follows the lives of Raghu’s son, which ends as a gangster, a follow-up probably one of the best films Sanjay Dutt is Vaastav ) etc .
